5 Killed in Sunday-Morning Crash in Trelawny

Five people have been confirmed dead in an early-morning crash in Trelawny on Sunday, according to a police report. The tragic collision occurred along the North Coast Highway and involved a Toyota bus. So far, the names of the victims have not been released.

Initial reports stated that two people died on the scene, subsequent reports details that three other persons died at the hospital with the possibility of more fatalities.

Dr. Lucien Jones, vice chairman of the National Road Safety Council, described the tragedy as “one of the worst multiple fatality crashes in recent times.”

The circumstances surrounding the crash are still under investigation, but police have pointed to excessive speeding, inattention, and failure to keep to the proper traffic lane as possible contributing factors.

The deadly crash happened shortly after the “Alkaline New Rules” entertainment event in Trelawny, though it is unclear if any of the victims had attended the show.

This latest tragedy echoes a similar incident in February 2024, when four people were killed in another early-morning crash in Trelawny involving a Mark X motorcar.

Road safety continues to be a significant concern in Jamaica, especially on the north coast. Since the start of the year, police data show that 194 people have died in 170 fatal crashes across the island.

Although these numbers are distressing, fatalities are down four per cent, and fatal crashes down three per cent compared to the same period last year.
