Dr. Horace Chang, Minister of National Security, is allowing persons in possession of illegal or unregistered firearms and ammunition to surrender the weapons to the State without fear of being prosecuted.
This announcement was made in Parliament on Tuesday and will include a 14-day gun amnesty that is scheduled to begin on November 5 and end on November 19.
Dr. Chang voiced that there are persons who may have inherited a firearm from a family member, or hard-working individuals who acquired one for their protection. Nonetheless, he asserted that an opportunity is being provided for these persons to hand over the weapons without facing any criminal charges.
“Once the amnesty expires, we can expect the full force of the law to be applied to anyone found in possession of an illegal firearm or ammunition,” he said.
Based on the penalties outlined for the forthcoming enforcement of the new Firearms Prohibition and Restriction Act, persons in breach can face up to 15 years to life imprisonment.
Persons who are in possession of illegal firearms may surrender them to the police or through an attorney-at-law.
