The 2024 Atlantic hurricane season, which officially ends on November 30, has been a particularly active one, with 18 named storms, 11 hurricanes, and 5 major hurricanes. These numbers surpass the average season, which typically sees 14 storms, 7 hurricanes, and 3 major hurricanes.

The season started with a historic event: Hurricane Beryl became the earliest Category 5 hurricane on record in the Atlantic on July 2. Beryl wreaked havoc across the Caribbean, causing widespread damage and fatalities before making landfall in southern Texas.

Jamaica was among the hardest-hit areas, with the Category 4 hurricane leaving a trail of destruction, including power outages, flooding, and infrastructure damage. Two deaths were confirmed, and over 250 blocked roads were reported.

However, the season’s intensity was not consistent. Following Beryl, a surprising lull occurred, with only four named storms—none of which were major hurricanes—forming between July and late September.

This quiet spell defied expectations, as sea surface temperatures remained above average, and the weakening of El Niño suggested favorable conditions for storm development. Researchers attribute this anomaly to shifting African weather patterns and Saharan dust, which suppressed tropical storm formation.

Activity picked up again in late September, and the season concluded with Tropical Storm Sara. Although Sara did not strengthen into a hurricane, it brought torrential rain to Central America, causing severe flooding along Honduras’s northern coast.
