On Tuesday, Vybz Kartel endorsed his sister, Dr. Maureen Mullings-Nelson for President of the Jamaica Teacher’s Association (JTA). Some fans are now calling for the Dancehall artiste to launch his own campaign and run for prime minister of Jamaica.

Dr. Mullings-Nelson, a Delaware State University alum, is a lecturer and training placement officer at The Mico University College. Reacting to a Yardhype report about Kartel endorsing his sister, fans extended their support, with some praising Dr. Mullings-Nelson’s teaching abilities.

Kartel has credited his sister in the past for encouraging him to take his education seriously. Dr. Mullings-Nelson is vying for JTA President-Elect for the conference year 2025-2026. She is running on a mandate of six key topics, including equitable salary adjustments, health and wellness support, improved NHT benefits, and better education resources and infrastructure.

One social media user expressed desire for the educator to win and added that Kartel should run for prime minister.

“I want her to win. And I want Vybz Kartel run for ja Prime Minister too. and I hope both win. End of story!!! Am from St Kitts and Nevis and I done talk,” the fan wrote.

Another social media users’ reaction to the report suggests that Dr. Mullings-Nelson is a member of the People’s National Party (PNP).

Shortly after his release from prison last year, Kartel made a surprise appearance at a PNP conference with his attorney Isat Buchanan. While Kartel did not speak at the event, his presence was a show of support for both Buchanan, who is the PNP candidate for East Portland, and the party itself.

The artiste also suggested that he could potentially run for Member of Parliament for South St. Catherine, where his hometown of Portmore is situated. Kartel made the statements while criticising the Jamaican political system during a live stream with Buchanan.

The deejay also said he would wait to see how PNP leader Mark Golding would run the country if he is elected.
