Donald Trump delivered a victory speech before being officially declared the winner of the 60th U.S. presidential election, however, as per several major news outlets, the president will be the winner based on several states won. Trump’s victory became evident early Tuesday morning as vote counts rolled in from critical states.
This achievement by Trump marks a historic return as the 47th president. Trump, now the second president in history to serve two nonconsecutive terms, also holds the unprecedented status of being the first president-elect with felony convictions.
Vice President Kamala Harris underperformed in key areas nationwide, falling short in multiple swing states that President Joe Biden had previously carried. Without addressing her supporters, Harris sent them home early in the morning, with a statement expected later today.
Many polls had forecasted a lengthy tallying process, but Trump’s projected win in Wisconsin gave him the necessary 276 electoral votes, securing the presidency less than a day after voting closed.
In comparison, the 2020 election had taken four days to announce a winner. Republican control of the Senate is confirmed, while control of the House remains undecided as counts continue.
Many Jamaicans had rooted for Harris, who has Jamaican heritage, and await her response to the election results. As Trump prepares to return to the White House, the country braces for a new chapter with a familiar yet controversial leader.
