As she continues to seek justice for her daughter Donna-Lee Donaldson, Sophia Lugg recounted the events leading up to the social media influencer’s disappearance and presumed death in 2022.
Lugg recounted the events during a live stream, clips of which began circulating a day ago.
After Donaldson’s boyfriend, Noel Maitland, was charged with her murder, it was disclosed that a photo with Maitland’s child’s mother, Kathy-Ann Smith, allegedly led to an argument before she was killed.
During the live stream, Lugg shared that her daughter found out about Maitland and Smith’s relationship after she had been dating the former police constable for two years. Lugg said that she and Donaldson met Smith while at the police station.
According to Lugg, they went there to report a physical altercation between her daughter and her cousin, and Smith was the officer at the reporting desk. After another officer suggested that Donaldson and the cousin would have to be arrested, Lugg said she told her daughter to call Maitland.
Lugg said that after Smith heard Maitland’s name, she showed them a photo and asked if it was the same man. Lugg shared that the photo was of Maitland and Smith on the beach together, and she revealed that she and he had been in a relationship for four years.
“She seh, ‘He is my boyfriend now for four years. But I’m telling you I’m going to leave him cause I have this problem with him. He’s not truthful and to be honest, you know I used to carry gun and they take di gun from mi because I tried to kill myself before because of Noel,” Lugg said.
She said Smith further shared that she and Maitland had recently been in an argument about a pair of women’s slippers that was found at the home. Lugg said Donaldson and Maitland argued about the same thing, indicating that there may have been a third woman in his life. Lugg also shared her suspicion that Maitland was sleeping with a woman who lived at his apartment building.
Despite Smith’s declarations at the station that she was going to leave Maitland and that Donaldson could have him, the pair never parted ways. Maitland reportedly told Donaldson that Smith was having a mental breakdown because her son was taken by his father.
“Yuh know weh him tell har seh, Kathy kind a guh mad because di son weh shi have di fada teck weh di baby and har mada just died. So him cyah leave har… Right now him affi teck time leave. If him try fi leave har shi a guh kill harself… Donna-Lee now so sympathising with her sometimes she will call Donna-Lee enuh caw shi get Donna-Lee number and a nuh Donna-Lee gi har. She’s a sociopath,” Lugg said.
She went on to share that Smith later became pregnant with Maitland’s child. Lugg said that she warned her daughter about Smith and Maitland on multiple occasions, and she tried to leave the relationship.
According to Lugg, after parting ways with Maitland for some time, Donaldson reached out to him to help her retrieve some money that she was owed. After helping her retrieve the funds, Lugg said Maitland got access to Donaldson’s bank card.
She also shared her suspicion that her daughter’s death may have been connected to the money. Lugg added that her daughter went missing a little over three months after resuming her relationship with Maitland.
Maitland is scheduled to appear in court on April 28. Despite the postponement of his trial date, Lugg expressed confidence that the former officer will be convicted for her daughter’s murder.
“Him cyah get off. Him cannot. Is no way he’s gonna get off this one. The whole Jamaica would a upside down and everybody know. The police federation know, the government know, everybody know. A the only case weh mama Sophia nah guh meck guh,” Lugg said.
She went on to express regret that her daughter did not listen to her many warnings. The grieving mother also expressed regret that she did not stop her from going to Maitland’s apartment the last time she was seen.
