18-year-old Reggae Boy Dujuan ‘Whisper’ Richards will undergo knee surgery this summer at the request of Chelsea, per report. It is also being said that this is the main reason why the teen footballer was not available for Jamaica’s senior squad for Copa America.

The injury seemingly took place while Whisper was in Jamaica’s under-21 camp back in 2022, causing him to miss several games afterwards. It is also said to be caused by a collision with another player.

‘That collision caused him to pick up a bad injury in his knee’ and he has been playing on it since, however, it acted up recently. Richards went on to make his senior international debut for Jamaica against Trinidad and Tobago in early 2023.

According to MG Sports TV, Chelsea ‘just found out’ about the injury and are assessing the situation, hence they did not want their new signee to play in the Copa America which may risk things getting worse.

It’s unclear if Chelsea was informed of the injury before the contract was signed, ‘they are a bit upset’. This is also being said to be the same reason why the forward player did not play in Jamaica’s World Cup Qualifiers in early June.

After the surgery, he is expected to be out of the game for about 6 to 8 weeks. This will be ‘Whisper’ Richards’ first major surgery since joining Chelsea. The surgery is expected to assist in the recovery of the injury.

Craig Butler confirmed that there is an issue, days ago via text messages he leaked of himself telling the Reggae Boyz’ coach, Heimir Hallgrímsson, that “Chelsea is giving us a hard time,” and “Chelsea is threatening to pull contract etc”. In a recent interview, it was also revealed that Whisper had a niggling injury.

Richards who is from the Phoenix Football Academy in Jamaica, signed a pre-contract with the English football club last summer and then went on to join the London-based club in December of 2023 after his 18th birthday.

Whisper played his first competitive match for Chelsea months ago on February 8, he first played for the under-18s, and shortly after he was featured in an under-21s match, he continued to play for the Under-21s since. He has scored 5 goals in just 8 matches for Chelsea under 21 so far.
