Elaine Thompson-Herah to Miss the World Championships for the First Time in 12 Years

Amid concerns about her track and field future, it is now confirmed that Jamaican double-double Olympic champion Elaine Thompson-Herah will not compete at this year’s World Championships.

The World Athletics Championships are scheduled to take place in Tokyo, Japan, from September 13 to 21. Ahead of the Championships later this year, the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA)/PUMA National Senior & Junior Championships is set to unfold from June 26-29 at the National Stadium in Kingston.

The late entry period for athletes to submit their names for the Senior Championships officially closed after Thursday. As the Senior Championships will determine who will join team Jamaica at the World Championships, Thompson-Herah’s failure to submit her name for the competition renders her ineligible.

The athlete has struggled with an Achilles tendon injury for the past few years and has not yet opened her season for the 2025 athletic year. Neither Thompson-Herah nor her team have released an official statement regarding her absence from this year’s World Championships.

This year’s championships will be the first time without the sprinter joining team Jamaica since 2013. The news follows Thursday’s revelation that Jamaican Olympians Roje Stona and Rajindra Campbell have switched their allegiance to Türkiye.

U20 triple jump champion Jaydon Hibbert and Olympic silver medallist long jumper Wayne Pinnock are also reportedly preparing to finalise their move.
