Following his appointment as the Reggae Boyz head coach in September 2022, Heimir Hallgrimsson announced his resignation from the position on Sunday.
The Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) confirmed Hallgrimsson’s resignation following the Reggae Boyz’ ninth straight defeat in the COPA America yesterday. Speaking on his departure from the team during an interview, Hallgrimsson seemingly suggested that his exit after Jamaica’s 3-0 loss to Venezuela was planned before the game.
The coach expressed that the timing is sufficient for his replacement to properly prepare for several important upcoming matches.
“I thought, looking forward, because I’ve already decided in my head I would step down as the coach, I thought this was the perfect moment because it gives the next one a Nations League cycle prior to the World Cup cycle. A lot of games now, September, October, November, to prepare the team for the important games that will come the year later,” Hallgrimsson stated.
The coach added that delaying his departure would only give his replacement less time for preparation.
Following Hallgrimsson’s resignation, Jamaican football fans have shared mixed reactions online, with some placing the blame for the Reggae Boyz’ performance on the federation and others on the coach.
“I think this coach came and expected MEN to be fighting when they wear the colors (this is what he is accustomed to in Iceland) but instead he sees alot of whining big boys who feel entitled in a jff system that is corrupt and unprofessional. All the best coach,” one Instagram user wrote.
Another viewer criticised Hallgrimsson for getting paid and providing no results.
“get all that money 💰 and no results wtf but that’s what they normally do anyway🤷♂️.”
