Ackeem Dixon, originally from the parish of St. Thomas, Jamaica, and a firefighter by trade jumped into action to help save a driver from what turned out to be a tractor-trailer fire. As per Dixon, he was on his way to a job interview when he noticed fire underneath a semi-truck.
He was driving along the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel, just before noon.
Recognizing the potential danger, he immediately sprang into action by driving in front of the truck and turning on his hazard lights causing the truck to come to a complete stop. Ackeem says he next got out of his car and rushed to the truck without hesitation.
After getting to the truck driver, he told the truck driver of the fire under the vehicle, moments later he managed to get the man out and away from the truck, he says right before he reached his car with the truck driver, a loud explosion was heard followed by the truck’s front end going up in flames.
“I knew I had to take action when I saw the fire,” Dixon said. His heroic efforts prevented what could have been a devastating disaster on one of the area’s busiest routes.
Dixon who is being hailed as a ‘Good Samaritan’ has been living overseas for over five years. He formerly worked at the Guantanamo Bay U.S. Navy base as a firefighter, where he gained valuable experience handling emergency situations.
Now residing in Newport News(an independent city in southeastern Virginia, United States), his expertise was put to the test in a real-world crisis on Tuesday.
The truck driver thanked Dixon after the incident.
