Port Royal Welcomes First Cruise Ship

The Marella Discovery 2 docked at the Port Royal Cruise Port on Monday, January 20, 2020. It was a historic moment that was witnessed by the Prime Minister Andrew Holness, the Minister of Tourism, Edmund Bartlett and other Government officials who were there to celebrate the momentous occasion.

The Prime Minister welcomed the more than 2000 passengers after the ship docked at 8:09 am.

The passengers who came off the cruise ship were, expected to be hosted by the Port Authority of Jamaica (PAJ) at an event at Fort Charles. 

Port Royal was ruled by Captain Henry Morgan, who was a notorious pirate, back in the days when the British controlled the island.

The historical reports stated that in 1692, Port Royal was destroyed when it was struck by a 7.5 magnitude earthquake and a Tsunami. Four of five forts were left underwater as 33 acres of the city were submerged, and 2000 residents were killed.

Even the Cemetery where the famous Captain Henry Morgan was buried was submerged. 

The Port Authority of Jamaica secured a floating pier for the east Kingston Town after they took a huge step towards the development of the new port.

Visitors will learn many historical facts about what is left of the historical town.
