Reggae Boyz vs Nigeria on Saturday Will be ‘Huge Test’

On Friday, head coach of the Reggae Boyz, Steve McClaren and current team captain Greg Leigh took part in a press conference for the final of the Unity Cup which will take place on Saturday, May 31.

The Caribbean team will face Nigeria in the last match of the short tournament. It’s known that both nations have a large cultural influence on the UK, especially as it relates to music. Hence bragging rights is up for grabs on Saturday.

In the press conference, it was noted that multiple players joined the team after the win against Trinidad and Tobago. Coach McClaren also disclosed that another player is expected to join the team on Friday to round off a better squad.

“Nigeria were very strong… they got premiere league players… they were together, they fought well together, play well together, so this is going to be a huge test for our players,” McClaren outlined.

It has been 21 years since Jamaica and Nigeria played against each other with the most recent meeting being back in 2004, the teams played against each other 7 time in the past, 4 of the games took place in the UK.

Nigeria beat Ghana 2-1 on May 28 to advance to the final after Jamaica beat Trinidad and Tobago 3-2 the day prior.

As reported earlier, Jamaica’s squad includes players such as Richard King, Mason Holgate, Dexter Lembikisa, Kyle Ming, Amari’i Bell, Greg Leigh, and Stephen Young, Isaac Hayden, Kasey Palmer, Brandon Cover, Jon Russel, and Daniel Green.

Additionally, Dwayne Atkinson, Renaldo Cephas, Warner Brown, Rumarn Burrel, Kaheim Dixon, and Jason East have been named as forwards.
