Released Footage Shows Fatal Shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Outside NYC Hotel

Security footage shows a lone gunman lying in wait before approaching Thompson from behind and firing multiple rounds. Thompson was struck in the back and calf, stumbling forward as the shooter continued firing.
Brian Thompson, 50, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, was fatally shot Wednesday morning in what authorities describe as a “premeditated, preplanned targeted attack.” The incident occurred outside the New York Hilton in Midtown Manhattan, where Thompson was en route to speak at UnitedHealth Group’s investor conference.
Witnesses scrambled for safety as the attacker cleared a jammed firearm and resumed shooting. Police recovered three discharged shell casings, three live rounds, and a cellphone at the scene.
Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed that the suspect lingered at the location for several minutes, seemingly waiting for Thompson. “Many people passed the suspect, but he appeared to wait for his intended target,” she said.
The motive remains unclear, but authorities believe the attack was personal and deliberate.
Thompson, who was pronounced dead at Mount Sinai West, had reportedly been receiving threats. His wife, Paulette Thompson, told NBC News, “There had been some threats… I don’t know details, but he said there were some people threatening him.”
Appointed CEO in 2021, Thompson led UnitedHealthcare, the insurance arm of UnitedHealth Group. His death has shocked the healthcare and business communities, prompting an outpouring of condolences.
Police are actively investigating the case, with the suspect still at large.
