Three-time Olympic gold medallist Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce was honoured on Sunday as the road that she lived on in Waterhouse while growing up was renamed from Ashoka Road to Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce Drive.

However, there was an error in the spelling of Fraser-Pryce, which was spelled as “Fraser-Price” on the newly erected sign. Despite the error, the legendary Jamaican sprinter was all smiles at the ceremony as she was accompanied by her husband, son and other family members.

It was initially announced on October 9 in 2024 that the name change will be done..

The ‘Pocket Rocket’ as she is affectionately called, also made a sizeable donation on the day, of US$50,000 which is approximately $7.9 million JMD to her alma mater, the Wolmer’s Trust High School for Girls.

Last summer the sprinter also assisted 25 students via her charitable organisation, the Pocket Rocket Foundation in which 25 student-athletes were awarded $100,000 each.

As it relates to the wrong spelling of her name on the road sign that was revealed over the weekend, the Kingston and St. Andrew Municipal Corporation (KSAMC) mayor, Andrew Swaby, has apologised publicly and outlined that the correction will be done before Monday ends.

“So that was a slip. I wholeheartedly apologise to Shelly-Ann, her sponsors, her family, and her community for that. Words can’t explain,” said Swaby.
