After expletives were hurled at him by Popcaan at Vybz Kartel’s Freedom Street concert, Skatta Burrell addressed the deejay’s statements in a lengthy interview aired on Saturday. Freedom Street continues to be widely praised as a historic success. However, some see the on-stage discourse as an unnecessary blemish on an otherwise successful night.

Speaking on The Fix Podcast, Skatta acknowledged that he is not well-liked and expressed that despite trying to appease the artistes that he works with, they always disrespect him. Skatta said that when he initially heard Popcaan call his name, he thought the artiste was going to shout him out but proceeded to disrespect not only him but also his mother.

The event promoter said that at that moment he began thinking about the fact that Popcaan, someone younger than him, was desrespecting him.

“Nutting else couldn’t run tru mi mind other dan dis man, dis lickle yute yah, dis lickle boy yah really a tell mi fi s**k mi mada…Mi consida miself as a grown man. Dem yute deh a lickle boy fi mi. Dem younga dan mi,” Skatta said.

Skatta shared that while he knows Kartel, he and Popcaan are not friends and he never had a two-minute conversation with the deejay. Explaining why Popcaan’s statement is particularly hurtful, Skatta shared that he recently went to visit his mother in the hospital.

He added that Popcaan further disrespected him by disregarding him as he continued his performance on stage. In regards to the now viral clip of him holding on to a microphone, which Kartel attempted to take, Skatta said he had no intention of starting a verbal altercation.

According to Skatta, he was still processing what had happened, and he joked that letting go of the mic felt like letting go of some of his power. He also suggested that he had a physical altercation with Popcaan backstage.
