A 76-year-old woman, identified as Bella Montoya, shocked friends and family when she woke up at her own funeral after being pronounced dead by doctors at the hospital where she was being treated.
According to the elderly woman’s son, Gilbert Balberán, his mother suffered a cardiorespiratory arrest which in turn caused catalepsy. Catalepsy is noted as a trancelike state that can be identified by the rigidness of the body, the slowing of bodily functions like breathing, and a decline in one’s responsiveness to pain.
After receiving a death certificate from the medical examiners with his mother’s name on it, Balberán stated that a funeral was held on Friday, June 9, in the city of Babahoyo, mere hours (4) later.
However, as the vigil progressed, the attending mourners were astonished to learn that Montoya was still alive and desperately banging on the inside of her coffin to get out. Speaking to local media, Balberán stated, “Her left hand was hitting the side of the coffin, and it was shaking.”
Video of the incident is circulating on social media as the woman can be seen lying in her casket being attended to by medical examiners, clearly alive. The Ecuadorian Ministry of Health is investigating why a death certificate was issued for a patient who is still breathing.
Although he is still coming to terms with what happened, Montoya’s son said, “My mother is on oxygen. Her heart is stable. The doctor squeezed her hand, and she reacted. They tell me this is a good sign because it means she is reacting little by little. Now, I only ask that my mother’s health improves. I want her alive and by my side.”
Reports state that Montoya is back at the hospital that had pronounced her dead and is currently in stable condition.
