Fraser-Pryce, Thompson-Herah and Jackson all Qualify for Women’s 200m Semi-Finals – World Champs
After a spectacular final in the Women’s 100m on Sunday, July 17, an equally jaw-dropping showcase is expected in the upcoming women’s 200m finals at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon. But before the finals, the contenders battled for a spot in the 200m heats on Monday, and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, Shericka Jackson and Elaine Thompson-Herah had no trouble advancing in each of their preliminaries.
Fraser-Pryce, Jackson and Thompson-Herah claimed gold, silver and bronze respectively on Sunday, giving Jamaica the coveted clean sweep. Many are now wondering and others hoping lightning could strike twice at the World Athletic Championships.
The recently turned 28-year-old Shericka Jackson is competing in her fourth straight World Championship but this will be her first time contending for the 200m gold. Her teammate, Olympic champion Thompson-Herah, withdrew from the 2019 semifinals due to an achilles injury and is no doubt seeking to redeem herself in this year’s race.
Jackson and Thompson-Herah may have their hearts set on gold but no Jamaican has won the 200m since Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce in 2013, who claimed a record-setting fifth World title on Sunday.
In the first 200m heat, an extremely focused Shericka Jackson easily came out ahead of her fellow competitors. Winning with a time of 22.33 seconds. The second heat saw Elaine Thompson-Herah placing second with 22.41 behind Beatrice Masilingi who placed first with 22.27, her season’s best. In the third heat for the 200m semi-finals, Fraser-Pryce was placed second finishing with 22.2 seconds.
