Jamaica 4th on Medal Table at the 2023 World Athletics Championships
As Jamaica’s athletes continue to represent the country in fine style at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary, the country is the only Caribbean nation thus far to make it onto the medal table in the competition.
With a total of three gold medals, four silver medals, and four bronze medals, Jamaica is currently ranked fourth on the medal table, with Canada and Spain in second and third, respectively.
Raking in the medals for Jamaica are sprinters Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, Shericka Jackson, Ackeem Blake, Oblique Seville, Ryiem Forde, Rohan Watson, Natasha Morrison, Shashalee Forbes, and Antonio Watson, hurdlers Danielle Williams, and Rushell Clayton, and long jumpers Tajay Gayle and Wayne Pinnock.
After a delayed start to her season, Fraser-Pryce claimed her tenth medal at the World Championships, placing third in the women’s 100m to take Bronze. Jackson secured silver in the 100m and went on to defend her title in the 200m, winning gold.
Also striking gold was 21-year-old Watson, who won the 400m men’s final, with Blake, Seville, Forde, and Watson, taking bronze in the men’s 1×100 relay. Fraser-Pryce, Jackson, joined by Morrison and Forbes, went on to take bronze in the 1×100 relay.
In one of the competition’s biggest triumphs, Williams claimed Jamaica’s first gold at the World Championships and secured her second world title in the 100m hurdles, following her first in 2015. Following Clayton’s first 400mh bronze medal at the 2019 World Championships, the athlete seized her second on Thursday.
Thursday also saw Pinnock and Gayle medaling in their long jump finals, with the men taking silver and bronze, respectively.
