In 2015, Kartel’s son Likkle Vybz and Likkle Addi ignited rumours after the release of their single titled ‘Radio’. While they expressed love for multiple other artistes, they declared that they did not trust Popcaan.

The line was enough to spark speculation as their father had previously hinted that they were at odds following his incarceration in 2011. Speaking with The Fix Podcast, Kartel explained that it was Popcaan’s decision to sign with Shocking Vibes producer Patrick Roberts after his arrest that caused friction in their relationship.

“The only issue mi and Poppy (Popcaan) have when mi just get lock up and deh a prison without consulting me him sign to Patrick Roberts. Just imagine this. Yuh just get lock up and yuh deh in a jail cell and si Popcaan pan TV seh him sign to Patrick Roberts and him nuh tell yuh,” Kartel said.

The deejay further expressed that Popcaan’s decision to join Roberts was understandable as they worked with Shocking Vibes, but he was not informed of his plans. Kartel said this was what led to his son Likkle Addi making the statement in the song, which he authorised. He noted that Likkle Addi wrote the lyrics.

As he continued to discuss his and Popcaan’s relationship, Kartel said that it goes far deeper than music, and after their brief disagreement, they remained in touch. According to Kartel, the public took it too far with the rumours that they began to spread.

“The public run wid it. Oh, Popcaan rob Kartel. Kartel did a rob Poppy das why him switch and him did deh wid Shorty, bro. Come on bro.”

Kartel went on to discuss YouTuber Sir P, who has been one of his major critics since his incarceration. He expressed that he does not pay much attention to anonymous YouTuber nor was he concerned that his statements could harm his case as he always hides his identity.

“Him a nuh nobody… In a court a law weh dem seh? Yuh have di right to see your accuser. Dat mean if mi a come bear witness against yuh mi affi show mi face in a court… No man weh deh behind closed door and a change him voice can do nutting to me. Wi nuh look pan yuh,” Kartel stated.

Kartel added that the last vlog he watched from Sir P was when the YouTuber accused him of trying to have Popcaan killed. According to the deejay, he and Popcaan both found it hilarious.
