In his latest interview, Jamaican singer Omi is calling for the end of the dunce culture that has been praised by many in Dancehall.
Said to have originated from Dancehall artiste Jamal, the slang ‘Fully Dunce’ has garnered mixed reactions from the Jamaican populace. While it has been widely accepted among many Jamaican artistes and youths, with schoolers igniting controversy with ‘Dunce’ bags, many have criticised the phrase.
Omi, who rose to international fame with his hit track Cheerleader, expressed his views on the topic during an interview with Richie Rich Records. The singer said it is time to get rid of it as it makes no sense.
“Meck wi get rid a dah dunce culture deh. That is my strong opinion if I would say I have one. Get rid a dah dunce ting deh. It nuh cute. It nuh meck nuh sense… Not even as a gimmick it nuh work,” Omi said.
Omi, who was formerly employed as a police officer, further stated that his experience has shown him that these so-called dunce people are the hardest people to deal with.
“Being an ex-cop, I would have seen… the two side a di fence. How life work, the exposure that I’ve gotten, and mi a tell yuh most a di most difficult people to deal with a di dunce people dem,” Omi said.
He went on to state that these people also get in trouble and find themselves in prison. The singer added that those who have accepted the label of dunce have not only failed academically but also have no reasoning ability, problem-solving skills, or emotional intelligence.
Omi also warned that if Jamaican youths continue to embrace this dunce culture that has been positioned in dancehall as a good thing, we will end up with an ignorant society while others are innovating. Watch the interview with Omi below.
