Following his induction into the Allianz Memorial Van Damme Hall of Fame on Wednesday, sub-10 sprinting king Asafa Powell expressed his gratitude on Thursday for receiving the prestigious honour.

The induction ceremony was held at the Memorial’s annual gala dinner at the Brussels City Hall in Brussels, Belgium, ahead of the annual Memorial Van Damme athletics meeting, which kicks off today at the King Baudouin Stadium. Powell was inducted into the Memorial’s Hall of Fame alongside retired French sprinter Marie-José Pérec and Ukrainian pole vaulter Sergey Bubka.

Expressing his gratitude in a post on Instagram, Powell shared that he was honoured and noted that he had made lasting memories while participating in the Allianz Memorial during his career. The sprinter ran a total of six of his record 97 sub-10-second races at the athletic event.

Powell went on to thank former meeting director Wilfried Meert for his support and encouragement throughout his career and complimented him on building the athletic meet “with creativity and integrity that is second to none”. Meert shared praise for Powell as well, stating that the sprinter had created a legacy that went beyond his wins at the meet.
