With the summer quickly approaching, local artistes are hungry to produce the coming party season’s summer anthem. The ever-dominant dancehall genre has taken command of the top five hottest songs in the country. But unlike the past, which saw veterans dominate the list, newcomers like rising dancehall star Valiant and unexpected breakout sensation 1Skimask have topped the list.
Taking the #5 slot on YouTube’s trending music list in Jamaica is Skeng and Jah Vinci’s Seh Feh. The single, which was produced by Notnice Records, has acquired over 528,000 views since its debut on the platform. Relatively still a newcomer in the dancehall arena, this is Skeng’s first time collaborating with former Gaza Empire member Jah Vinci, who regained popularity with his 2020 hit single Vergin.
Following his early release from prison in March, Tommy Lee Sparta wasted no time working on new collaborations, debuting the music video for his joint single Tic Tac Toe with Valiant and Rvssian mere weeks after his prison release. Produced by Rvssian’s Head Concussion Records, Tic Tac Toe soared to the number one spot in trending music within two days of its release on April 6 but currently sits at #4 with 2.7 million views.
As one of dancehall’s rising female artistes, Shaneil Muir shocked many in the music industry when she announced her departure from the genre after hitting rock bottom following a disagreement with her former manager. However, the Yamabella singer has not made her exit just yet, and her collaborative single Crawsis with 450 was released on April 14. The track is now #3 on the trending list with 1.1 million views.
Claiming the #2 spot with one of the country’s top singles, Dawkniss, is undoubtedly Jamaica’s least likely artiste, 1Skimask. 1Skimask, a comedic caricature of the everyday Jamaican dancehall artiste, is the brainchild of social media comedian Valdomore. The character was originally created and excellently utilised for Valdomore’s skits on social media. But the comedian has seemingly hacked the industry with 1Skimask, with his first single garnering over 800,000 views since its premiere on April 21.
No stranger to the #1 spot, Valiant kicked off 2023 with nine out of the ten top songs on YouTube’s music charts and is now a fixture on the streaming platform’s trending music list for Jamaica. The Speed Off deejay acquired his most recent #1 spot with his April 18 release, Insomnia. Insomnia was produced by Diplomats Records, Crown Heights Entertainment, and Chopline Records.
The song is one of Valiant’s more sombre tracks and has amassed 1.5 million views since its premiere.
