Flippa Moggela in ‘Good Spirit’ Reflects on Lessons Learnt During Incarceration: Interview
Discussing his 2015 conviction in a new interview, Dancehall artiste Flippa Moggela reflected on the lessons he learnt while incarcerated and how he has changed.
The Dem Yah deejay was arrested in September of 2013 in California and later convicted for drug trafficking and money laundering. During his interview, he shared that he was aware that the authorities had been investigating him but assumed that they did not have any evidence against him.
According to Flippa, he was dragged into the lifestyle that led to his imprisonment. Speaking on On Stage, he expressed that his arrest and conviction have forever changed his life.
While incarcerated, the entertainer obtained his high school diploma and was enrolled in a Princeton College programme. However, due to his early release and parole, he had to exit the programme before earning his associate degree.
Flippa shared that he has always loved music, and it pulled him away from school during his youth, but education has always been important to his family. Flippa, who cannot leave America due to his parole, expressed that he is a more humble man since his release and far more patient.
The deejay further expressed that he now values the little things in life that he had taken for granted before his arrest.
“That day till now change mi life because it make mi a more humble person. And mek mi look pan life different and learn fi appreciate simple tings little tings weh wi neva use to appreciate,” Flippa said.
Flippa went on to state that he is proud of how far he has come, especially because there are people who were looking forward to his downfall. The deejay added that, for the most part, he believes that his incarceration was a good thing.
“Mi tink it turn out fi di best fi mi because so many people die during that time frame. And mi feel like di way mi did a guh hard, di way mi did a floss, and di way mi did a behave like a lot a people did jealous and mi feel like mi would a lose mi life,” Flippa said.
The Unfinished House artiste explained that his one regret is how long he was lockedup and not being able to be there for his children.
“Mi kids dem did really need mi… and some a mi kids dem nuh turn out di way mi wah dem fi turn out… Cause it mess wid dem cuase dem use to dem fada doing everyting fi dem.”
Despite not being able to provide for them the way he would have wanted, Flippa said that his children are doing well. He shared that one of his daughters is currently studying accounting while one of his sons is studying to become a nurse.
In regards to his career in Dancehall, Flippa said his music is in a very good place right now. While he has dabbled in more positive music, the artiste explained that people have been calling for the old Flippa Moggela as his catalogue remains relevant today.
