France Advance To World Cup Finals Against Argentina – Watch Highlights
With Argentina’s World Cup final spot firmly secured, reigning 2018 FIFA champions France and first-time World Cup semifinalist Morocco faced off at the Al Bayt Stadium on Wednesday.
On December 10, Morocco made history with their 1-0 victory over Portugal and became the first Arab and African nation to reach the World Cup semifinals. But France has never lost a match to the Moroccans, whom they have faced five times outside of the World Cup. Their last meeting in 2007 ended in a 2-2 draw in Paris.
Morocco conceded its first goal in the tournament to an opposition player in the first five minutes of the match, with Theo Hernandez opening the scoring for France. The Moroccans lost their captain, Romain Saiss, to injury and changed their formation in the 21st minute but were unable to equalise for the remainder of the first half.
Morocco increased their attacking pressure on France in the second half, but the European nation’s defence deprived them of a second-half equaliser. As the match drew to a close, 78th-minute substitute Kolo Muani sealed France’s lead with a goal just moments after he stepped onto the field, and the French claimed the second World Cup final spot with a 2-0 victory.
