Jamaican deejay, Robert Lee Malcolm o/c Gully Bop’s death in October of 2023 left many of his fans and the music fraternity saddened. Previous reports revealed that the entertainer was battling a kidney disease, however, recent reports are that he was also struggling with cancer for many years.

In 2023, Gully Bop appeared on numerous media pages where he disclosed that he was suffering from health issues and sought assistance from the public financially. But, little did the world know that he was also battling a terminal illness and only confided this diagnosis with a handful of persons.

According to a recent news report from the Jamaica Gleaner, his sister, Ann Marie Chamberlain was one of his confidants who knew of his cancer struggles for over two years. She confirmed that the deceased kept the matter private and only told very close members of his family.

His producer, Wayne Thomas, more popularly known as ‘Joseph Current’ revealed that he was made aware of this diagnosis in the latter part of last year. Even after being by Gully Bop’s side while he was admitted at the Kingston Public Hospital (KPH), he stated that the entertainer did not disclose it to him.

Gully Bop died at the age of 59 after rising to fame in 2014 for the hit single Body Specialist.

Thanksgiving service for him will be held on Sunday, January 14 at the Ranny Williams Entertainment Centre in Kingston. He will then be laid to rest in King Weston, Lawrence Tavern in the family plot where his grandmother was also buried.
