As per reports, a Jamaican national who was reportedly fighting for Russia was captured in early November 2024. In a video by Warthog Defence, it was alleged that the Jamaican national was one of three prisoners who were captured by the Sheikh Mansur Chechen Peacekeeping Battalion.
The Sheikh Mansur Battalion is one of the Chechen volunteer armed formations currently aiding the Ukrainian armed forces.
Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, and both countries have so far been unable to negotiate peace.
In addition to the Jamaican mercenary, a member of the Russian Akhmat special forces battalion and a member of a regiment from Primorsky Krai were also reportedly captured by Sheikh Mansur.
The Jamaican was not identified by name but was allegedly taken while fighting in Zaporizhzhia, Ukraine.
According to reports from The Guardian, a Ukrainian military spokesman recently disclosed that the Russians have been preparing for several weeks to conduct assault operations in several areas of Ukraine, specifically in the Zaporizhzhia area.
Following Russia’s invasion in 2022, Prime Minister Andrew Holness condemned the military action the country had taken against Ukraine. Jamaican nationals were also encouraged to leave Russia where necessary.
