Jamaican shot putter Rajindra Campbell secured bronze for Jamaica in the men’s shot put at the Olympic Games in Paris on Saturday.
Campbell is the reigning national champion and competed in today’s final at the Stade de France in what would be a historical performance.
The 28-year-old was the first Jamaican since O’dayne Richards in 2016 to qualify for the final of the men’s shot put, with a qualifying distance of 21.05m.
In his first throw for the sporting event, Campbell registered a distance of 20.00m.
The athlete went on to throw 22.15m in his second attempt on the field.
American Ryan Crouser went on to take gold with a distance of 22.90m, while his teammate, Joe Kovacs, claimed silver.
Campbell’s bronze medal win is the first medal for a Jamaican in the men’s shot put at the Olympic Games.
Prime Minister Andrew Holness has since congratulated the athlete on his historic performance.
