The Sunshine Girls have continued their winning streak in the 2022 Commonwealth Games with their fifth consecutive win, defeating the Australia Diamonds in Birmingham, England.
Jamaica’s Sunshine Girls have not only come out on top of Pool A but have made Commonwealth Games history after defeating Australia’s Diamonds on Thursday. Both teams began today’s match at the top of the pool and undefeated. The veteran, three-time gold-medalist Diamonds had gained a slim one-goal lead in the first quarter and at the half-time break. The Diamonds’ chances of winning further improved after they had attained a five-goal lead in the third quarter and still had the Sunshine Girls down by a six-point deficit in the fourth.
But the Sunshine Girls rebounded in the final eight minutes, with Captain Jhaniele Fowler equalising the game at 48-48. The Sunshine Girls quickly took the lead with seven minutes left in the match, then finished strong, beating the Commonwealth champions 57 to 55. Fowler ended the match with a total of 47 goals in her 50 attempts, and teammate Shanice Beckford gained a perfect 10 goals from 10 attempts.
The Sunshine Girls are the only team to score 100 goals in this year’s Commonwealth Games and are fighting hard for a gold medal finish after two bronze medal finishes in the past two Games.
