The debate over who rightfully holds the title of King of Dancehall continued when Vybz Kartel addressed the status in a lengthy interview with DJ Akademiks that surfaced on Wednesday.

In the interview, Kartel revealed that since his release from prison, he and Beenie Man have not been in communication. However, he expressed respect for the veteran deejay, acknowledging Beenie Man’s significant contributions to the genre.

“Beenie Man is a legend, like who can deny that, I have a couple hit songs with Beenie Man,” he said. The Fever hitmaker further stated that he holds no personal grudges against him, “I have no problems with the guy,” he said.

Recalling comments made during a recent appearance on Onstage TV with Winford Williams, Kartel noted that even Williams, an established entertainment guru, referred to him using the title, which had been given to him before his 13-year incarceration.

“The title has always been bestowed upon me, even before I went to prison,” Kartel said.

Vybz Kartel also acknowledged Beenie Man as the “previous” King of Dancehall. To support this claim, he pointed out that if people visit both of their Instagram pages, they will see Beenie Man referring to himself as “King Beenie,” while himself claims the title of “King of Dancehall.”
