The sprinter’s silver win was the first time a Jamaican made it to the podium in the 100m since Usain Bolt’s reign and three straight titles at the 2008, 2012, and 2016 Games. However, like his fans, Thompson had hoped that he would capture gold, which he narrowly missed out on by a thousandth of a second.

Speaking with Sportsmax TV, he said that he enjoyed himself and is really grateful to have competed in his first Olympics. Though he was appreciative of completing his first Olympics 100m, the athlete expressed that there is a lot more work to do, and trusting his speed may have changed yesterday’s outcome.

“The way I should have run the race, I guess I didn’t trust my speed like I should have, like previous times. But I know I am inexperienced. It’s not an excuse; I have to just adapt and overcome. It will be better from here,” Thompson stated.

The twenty-three-year-old further stated that there will be no excuses going forward as he sharpens all his skills and improves both physically and mentally. Thompson added that he has gained a lot of experience handling pressure from attending his first Olympics.

In a subsequent interview, he shared that he was “excited nervous” ahead of the race as he was looking forward to competing. However, the sprinter said he should have been more patient with himself. In regards to narrowly missing out on the gold medal, Thompson expressed that he is more upset that he did not better his previous performances.

“It’s not just that I didn’t win the gold; it’s that I didn’t better myself, in a sense, because I really wanted to better myself [ … ] I really gained a lot of experience running with all these great competitors, big up to every one of them. But, in a sense, as I said, I really beat myself today. I really didn’t trust myself enough and my speed to bring me to the line.”
