According to the Jamaican Gleaner, Leon Bailey is the highest-earning Jamaican player in the English Premier League (EPL), with a salary of over £6.2 million, approximately JM$1,191,566,220, per year.
The news outlet further reported that the Aston Villa player is the joint sixth top-paid player at the English football club, with French defender Lucas Digne and Scottish midfielder John McGinn both receiving the same salary. Reacting to the Gleaner’s report on Bailey’s salary, Craig Butler questioned how they came by the information that was included in their article.
Butler’s question got over 24 replies in just three hours, with most of the commenters pointing out that the information is most likely available online and while it might not be the exact amount, it most likely would not be far off the figure.
One person told Butler, “the British media quite public with players contract information. Maybe not all details, but salaries usually public,” another person said, “CB too nuff.Players salary in the EPL is a public knowledge.”
On the other hand, others defended Bulter with one person stating, “it’s the man’s son …… so he can’t ask a question?” and “Everyone else getting their panties in a bunch for no reason.”
The Jamaica Gleaner’s Instagram page is yet to reply to Butler’s comment.
Following his exit from Bayer Leverkusen in the 2021-22 season, Bailey was in the top five of Aston Villa’s top earners. However, as the club has improved the contracts of other players and welcomed new ones to the team, Bailey now resides in the top ten.
Some of the club’s top earners include the likes of Youri Tielemans, Boubacar Kamara, and Argentine goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, who each earn £7,800,000 annually. In regards to the earnings of other Jamaican players who are in the Premier League, West Ham striker Michail Antonio is the second-highest-earning Jamaican and receives an annual salary of £4,160,000.
Bobby Reid ranks third with a yearly income of £1,820,000 from Leicester City, while Ethan Pinnock ranks fourth and earns an annual salary of £1,560,000 from playing for Brentford.
