A Chinese man and his mistress were executed on Wednesday for murdering the man’s 2-year-old daughter and his 1-year-old son, who were viewed as obstacles in their relationship.
According to reports, the man, identified as Zhang Bo, initially kept his marriage and his children a secret from his mistress, Ye Chengchen. Zhang later divorced his wife, Chen Meilin, in February 2020.
Despite Zhang splitting from his wife, Ye regarded his children as “obstacles” to their getting married and urged him to kill the toddlers as they were a “burden on their future life together.” Chen disclosed that her ex-husband requested to take care of his daughter on the day he killed their children in 2020.
Reports from the New York Post state that Zhang threw the children from the 15th floor of a residential tower in Chongqing. Before he was convicted, Zhang initially claimed the children fell from the building while he was sleeping.
The children’s mother shared that her feelings were indescribable upon hearing what Zhang had done.
“I couldn’t imagine what my kids had experienced from the 15th floor to the ground. Were they desperate? Were they afraid?” Chen stated.
The murders ignited shock across China, and both Zhang and Ye were convicted and sentenced to death in 2021. The couple later appealed their sentences. However, the sentences were deemed appropriate by the Chongqing High People’s Court, which described the crime as “despicable” and “brutal.”
Details regarding how Zhang and Ye were executed yesterday are not clear. But, according to the Daily Mail, the most common form of execution in the country is by lethal injection.
