A 53-year-old man died from his injuries after he crashed into a fireworks store and set off a series of explosions on Monday in the U.S. state of Florida.
In videos captured by witnesses at the scene of the crash, thick, dark smoke can be seen rising into the air as fire engulfs the store and scores of fireworks explode simultaneously. Reports state that John Marcano, who was on his way to pick up his sons, was driving along West New Haven Avenue in an SUV when he collided with a Toyota.
The female driver reportedly pulled over to exchange information with Marcano after the collision, but Marcano allegedly struck her again. Consequently, causing both vehicles to charge through the intersection and into the parking lot of the Phantom Fireworks store.
Marcano then crashed into the store, which set off the fireworks housed inside and ignited the massive blaze. The driver of the Toyota escaped without injury, as did the employees who were working in the store during the crash. The building was also destroyed during the fire, as it took emergency response teams hours to put out the blaze and Marcano was discovered dead at the scene.
An investigation into the incident is ongoing, as authorities have not yet been able to confirm what caused the crash. Florida Highway Patrol Lt. Channing Taylor disclosed that an autopsy will be performed, which the police hope will shed light on the matter.
