International hip hop artiste Nicki Minaj received MTV’s Video Music Awards (VMA) Vanguard award on Sunday and shouted out the Jamaican people as well as dancehall artistes Beenie Man and Skeng during her acceptance speech.

The Trinidadian-born rapper co-hosted last night’s award ceremony along with fellow rappers LL Cool J and Jack Harlow at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. Before accepting her award, the artiste treated the audience to a performance of some of her biggest hits, including Anaconda, Moment 4 Life, Chun-Li, and her newest chart topper, Super Freaky Girl.

Later, taking to the stage to accept the VMA’s highest honour, named after the king of pop, Minaj was presented with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard award by members of her fan club known as the Barbz. Not wanting to forget a word, the rapper sent for her phone with the speech she had written. Minaj thanked the artistes that inspired her and her “flow”, such as Lil Wayne, Foxy Brown, and Lauryn Hill.

The entertainer went on to thank people who presented her with great opportunities, such as Kanye West, Beyoncé, and Rihanna. She then took a moment to acknowledge her Jamaican and Caribbean supporters and thanked dancehall veteran Beenie Man and hailed young dancehall artiste Skeng.

“All my Caribbean people, but Beenie Man, thank you for everything and all of Jamaica. Skeng wha a gwaan,” Minaj stated.

The rapper recently added her remix to Skeng’s Likkle Miss on her greatest hits compilation album Queen Radio: Volume 1, which was released on August 26. Minaj and Skeng have been promoting the new track, with both artistes posting the cover art for the remix on social media.
