An American police officer collapsed while on duty after she was reportedly exposed to the drug Fentanyl during a traffic stop.
According to reports, officer Courtney Bannick, a member of the Tavares Police Department in Florida, discovered narcotics on a passenger during a traffic stop after midnight on Tuesday. The police department disclosed that the officer was wearing gloves during the search. But after the passenger was removed and taken into custody, Bannick experienced difficulty breathing and had to receive aid from her fellow officers.
The incident was caught on police body cam footage, and Bannick can be seen laying on the floor (at times unresponsive), drifting in and out of consciousness as an officer administers Narcan. Narcan is a medication used to reverse or reduce the effects of opioids and overdoses. Officer Bannick received three doses of the life-saving medication and was taken to a hospital for treatment.
Bannick is currently recovering and shared that she was grateful to have not been alone during the ordeal.
“I have done this one-hundred times before the same way. It only takes one time and a minimal amount […] I’m thankful I wasn’t alone and had immediate help,” Bannick stated.
It is not known exactly how Bannick became exposed to the drug, but the authorities have hypothesized that she may have inhaled it from the air due to the wind.
