Reggae Boyz Captain Andre Blake Makes History with Third MLS Goalkeeper of the Year Award

On Wednesday, Major League Soccer (MLS) announced that Reggae Boyz’ captain and goalkeeper, Andre Blake, would be 2022’s Allstate MLS Goalkeeper of the Year awardee, making him the only player to receive the accolade for a record third time.

Blake, who plays for the American football club the Philadelphia Union, was first awarded the title in 2016 and would go on to win it for the second time in 2020. The father of two was joined by his wife, Shauna-Kay Blake, and one of his sons in the football stadium after the announcement was made.

Blake had a 79.4% save percentage, which was the most among goalkeepers who appeared in at least three games and led the league with 15 shutouts. With Blake as goalkeeper, Union was MLS’s team with the lowest number of conceded goals, which helped them earn the Eastern Conference’s No. 1 seed in the Audi 2022 MLS Cup Playoffs.

The 31-year-old was drafted into the club in 2014 and remains one of its longest-tenured players. He was selected as an MLS All-Star for the fourth time in his career this year and won the John Wanamaker Athletic Award for 2022, making him the first men’s football player to receive the award since its inception in 1961.
