As she continues to garner international recognition for her success on the field, Reggae Girlz captain Khadija “Bunny” Shaw has been nominated for the 2023 Women’s Ballon d’Or.
Shaw’s exceptional performance has not only secured her a nomination for what is deemed by many to be the most prestigious individual award in football but a place in history as well. The 26-year-old is now the first Jamaican international football player to be nominated for the Ballon d’Or.
The shortlist for the award, which is handed out by French magazine France Football, was announced on Wednesday, with the award ceremony scheduled for October 30. The Manchester City W.F.C. forward was shortlisted alongside 29 other female professional footballers, including her City teammates Yui Hasegawa from Japan and Jill Roord of the Netherlands.
Shaw is currently the Jamaica Reggae Girlz’ all-time leading goalscorer and Man City’s highest-scoring player in a single season. If the Spanish Town native is able to secure the Women’s Ballon d’Or, she may potentially claim the award alongside Lionel Messi. The Argentinian is considered by many the likely winner of the Men’s Ballon d’Or award.
