Shenseea, known for always stepping out of the box musically, has taken to doing a cover for the song Hallelujah which was originally written and recorded by Leonard Cohen in June 1984 and released on December 11 of the same year.
The song has been a staple for controversy since its release, even though it was not particularly popular until a cover was done by Jeff Buckley (with modified lyrics) as a part of his 1994 album Grace. Many other artistes have made their own versions of covers for Hallelujah since its original release, and dancehall princess Shenseea now joins the list of over 300 renditions of the piece.
In Shenseea’s version, there were hardly any variations from the original lyrics. Her delivery and tone of the cover featured a light lilt and interjections of deep baritone at the end of sentences. Although Cohen’s song has four verses and a verse of additional lyrics, the Shengyeng Anthem singer used two of those verses, the additional verse, and the chorus to make up her composition.
She sang, “It goes like this, the fourth, the fifth, the minor falls, the major lifts. The baffled king composing “Hallelujah”…Your faith was strong but you needed proof. You saw her bathing on the roof, her beauty in the moonlight overthrew ya.” The song, with its many interpretations, speaks about king David from the bible who lusted after his friend’s wife, going against the teachings of God to pursue her. The mix of gospel and sexual innuendos tells the tale of how a man recounts his wrongdoing to God honestly and openly.
In her closing, the mother of one croons, “Maybe there’s a God above, but all I’ve ever learned from love was how to shoot somebody who outdrew you. And it’s not a cry that you hear at night and it’s not someone who’s seen the light, it’s a cold and it’s a broken Hallelujah.”
The cover currently has over six thousand likes and more than 41 thousand views in less than 24 hours of its upload to YouTube.
Someone commented on the cover saying, “Shenseea just continue to show her versatility. She is definitely not stuck in a box like matches in a box. 🇯🇲 🌴☀️🌴,” while another pointed praised, “Goose bumps on my skin for how she’s sounding like an angel….that voice of hers singing like this is so calming. Thank you Shenseea.”
