Following their loss in the opening game of their three-match test series against England’s Vitality Roses, Jamaica’s Sunshine Girls rebounded to win day two of the series on Saturday. With the Girls and the Roses both securing a victory, the test series’s champion will be decided during the finale on January 15.
On Wednesday, the Girls enjoyed an early lead against the Roses at the AO Arena in Manchester. But England returned with a winning finish in the second half of the match to defeat the Commonwealth Games silver medalists.
Sunshine Girls Captain Jhaniele Fowler acknowledged that the team had made several errors during the opening game, which she said were self-made, but expressed that the team was looking forward to a better performance in match two.
On Saturday, Fowler opened the scoring of the first quarter, with England taking the lead with a six-point deficit over the Girls, the exact point deficit the Girls had led by in Wednesday’s opener. In the second quarter, the Sunshine Girls gradually reduced the point differential between themselves and the Roses before levelling the score and taking the lead with 31-27.
The Girls maintained their lead during the third quarter, closing the quarter with a seven-point lead with a score of 48-41. In quite the reversal of Wednesday’s game, the Sunshine Girls bounced back from a six-point deficit to end the fourth quarter with a 61-58 victory over the Vitality Roses.
