Tory Lanez Gets 10-year Prison Sentence for Shooting Megan Thee Stallion

Canadian rapper Tory Lanez who was found guilty of shooting hip-hop sensation Megan Thee Stallion in the foot following their departure from a party in the Hollywood Hills was handed a 10-year prison term on Tuesday, August 8, 2023.

The prosecution had sought a 13-year state prison sentence. However, Judge David Herriford, presiding over the Los Angeles Superior Court, declared a 10-year sentence as he delivered the verdict. Conversely, the defence team had sought probation for their client.

The Canadian artiste, aged 31, had been found guilty on December 23 last year on charges of possessing a “loaded” unregistered firearm in a vehicle, assault with a semiautomatic firearm, and recklessly discharging a firearm.

Since being apprehended after the jury’s verdict, Lanez has remained in custody. The shooting incident occurred three years prior.

According to NBC Los Angeles, during the trial, Megan testified that Lanez had fired the gun towards her feet, instructing her to dance as she moved away from an SUV they had been travelling in during the summer of 2020. The incident followed their departure from a party held at Kylie Jenner’s residence in the Hollywood Hills.

In a statement conveyed by Los Angeles County Deputy District Attorney Kathy Ta, during an extended session on Monday, Megan expressed, “Since the defendant brutally shot me, I haven’t experienced a single day of tranquillity. Although I am slowly healing and regaining my strength, I will never be the same.”

Megan, who testified in the trial, deliberated on whether to present her statement in person but eventually chose not to attend due to her discomfort around Lanez.

She stressed that her absence shouldn’t be misconstrued as indifference and called upon Judge David Herriford to impose a substantial sentence.

Originally intended to be a brief hearing, the sentencing procedure spanned two days as Herriford had both sides’ legal representatives present their arguments about various aspects of Lanez’s potential sentence.

The judge also allowed seven witnesses, including Lanez’s father and his son’s mother, to speak about his charitable contributions, childhood trauma, and his role as a caring parent.

Tory Lanez’s legal team contended that he should only be granted probation and be released to engage in a substance abuse program. The team has plans to appeal his conviction.
