Following the release of her single Jump, South African singer Tyla released the music video for the track on Monday, with both of her collaborators making appearances. After the success of her breakout single Water, Tyla released her self-titled debut album in March.
The 13-track project featured Jump, her first collaboration with American rapper Gunna, and Jamaican dancehall artiste Skillibeng. Jump’s music video was directed by Nabil and primarily shot in Johannesburg, South Africa, where Tyla was born and raised.
The video kicks off with shots of Tyla in a Johannesburg community, including shots of some rowdy tenants and the singer getting her hair braided. Skillibeng’s intro sees the Dancehall star with his crew in the fenced yard of what appears to be a small Jamaican community.
Following Skillibeng’s intro, the visuals jump to Tyla back in Johannesburg, and Gunna makes his first appearance in the video as the singer’s chauffeur as she begins her verse, “They ain’t never heard a pretty girl from Joburg. See me now, and that’s what they prefer. I don’t touch no wheel ’cause I got a chauffeur, first-class how I get around the world.”
Gunna kicks off his verse with shots of him and Tyla at a club, and Skillibeng makes a second appearance as he performs the track’s outro. Most viewers of the video praised Tyla for her authentic South African visuals and for displaying the poorer parts of the country.
“Stopping the taxi to dance, the go-slos, the angry men flipping over the dice table, getting her hair braided on that uncomfortable plastic chair, the gogos playing football, this is so South African,” one viewer stated.
While another wrote, “Wow finally an artist who shows other parts of South Africa not these American wannabe artists who always shoot their MVs in fancy places, you’re here to stay Queen Mzansi loves wholeheartedly.”
Following its release a few hours ago, Jump‘s music video has so far acquired over 205,000 views and 46,000 likes.
