Based on the police report, the death has been determined to have been a suicide.

Atherton was at home on Sports Road in Islington, St Mary, when she reportedly told her mother and stepfather that she was heading outside to do her laundry, according to police reports.

When she failed to return after a few hours, her stepfather went in search of her to find out where she was. Her body was reportedly discovered by him, hanging from the branch of a tree, by a hose. It was then that the police were called, and Atherton’s body was taken away from the scene.

Based on assumptions that have been swirling around her, it appears that she was facing financial issues as well as relationship difficulties. However, St Mary’s police are continuing their investigation into the tragic incident.

In an interview with the Jamaican Observer following the discovery, Superintendent Bobette Morgan-Simpson, the head of the St. Mary Police Division, stated the following, “This was her second attempt; she had tried before, she was seen hanging from a tree and was cut down, she did it again today.”
