After initial reports of three persons succumbing to their injuries following the crash in Trelawny on Sunday, August 4, follow-up reports reveal that a fourth person passed away. The accident took place on the North Coast Highway in the parish.
As per police reports, around 8 a.m., Marlon Lyons was driving a Toyota Probox towards Montego Bay direction when it collided with the rear of a truck. All seven occupants of the vehicle were injured and rushed to the hospital.
Videos circulating online show Lyons trapped in the car as other victims lie on the ground with blood on them.
The victims have been identified as 19-year-old Anthony Walters from Alexandria, St. Ann; 39-year-old Jody Levy from Brown’s Town, St. Ann; 32-year-old Sabrina Downie from Discovery Bay; and Marlon Lyons, a taxi driver from Braco, Trelawny.
This incident raised Trelawny’s road fatality count to 22 for the year. As of July 31, Jamaica has seen a total of 222 road fatalities.
The Island Traffic Authority attributes these fatalities primarily to speeding, improper lane usage, and pedestrians on the roadway.
“The car was licensed to carry five, yet there were seven on board,” noted Superintendent Winston Milton, Head of the Trelawny police.
