A car attack at a sports stadium in southern China’s Zhuhai city has claimed the lives of at least 35 people and injured at least 43 others in what is being described as the deadliest act of public violence in the country in decades.
The tragic incident occurred on Monday when a 62-year-old man, identified as Mr. Fan, drove his vehicle onto a running track at the Zhuhai Sports Center, targeting individuals exercising at the venue.
Local police revealed on Tuesday that initial investigations suggest the attack stemmed from a property dispute following Mr. Fan’s divorce. Police stated that Mr. Fan, who attempted to flee the scene, inflicted injuries on himself and remains in a coma, making questioning impossible at this time.
Witnesses reported that the car deliberately struck multiple groups of people across the track in a devastating rampage.
As shown in photos, many people can be seen motionless on the ground after the attack.
Authorities have described the incident as a “serious and vicious attack.” Among the injured were children and elderly individuals, highlighting the indiscriminate nature of the assault.
The tragedy has sparked national outrage, with President Xi Jinping condemning the act and calling for “severe punishment” for the perpetrator. He also urged comprehensive efforts to assist the victims and their families.
The stadium, a popular spot for community exercise, has become the center of mourning. Residents have begun laying flowers and tributes at the site. One witness, Mr. Chen, recounted the harrowing moment his walking group narrowly escaped the oncoming vehicle, which “knocked down many people.”
Other people were jogging when the attack took place.
