68YO Sentenced to 9 Years for Stealing Large Amount of Chicken Wings
As per reports, a 68-year-old female from Cook County in the USA was sentenced to nine years in prison after stealing over one million worth of food from Harvey School District 152. The food items are mostly chicken wings.
The woman who has been identified as Vera Lidell, pleaded guilty to the theft. Details are that, Lidell placed hundreds of unauthorized food orders through the district’s supplier while she was Director of Food Services for the district.
A total of $1.5 million worth of food items were ordered between July 2020 and February 2022, including 11,000 cases of chicken wings which are said to be separate from legitimate orders made for the School District.
The illegal act started during COVID-19 when students were unable to go to classes, however, the district provided meals on school days that could be picked up for the students. The 68-year-old used a district cargo vehicle to transport the stolen food items.
The fraud was noticed after an audit showed that the food service department had exceeded its budget, furthermore, suspicion arose after it was discovered that a large amount of chicken wings were being bought for the schools, however, check wings are not served to schools because they contain bones.
The senior woman was charged with felony theft, operating a financial crime enterprise, and forgery.
