The tragedy had many citizens enraged because this is the second time in two months a horrific incident of the type took place in Iraq, which left many people dead as in April an Oxygen cylinder exploded killing over 82 persons at a Baghdad hospital.

The most recent explosion took place at the al-Hussein Teaching Hospital in Nasiriyah on Monday, and according to one witness, both the Police and Workers fled the scene upon the explosion, leaving patients and their relatives in the blaze that started from a smoke.

The witness also stated that the fire brigade also came one hour late, having to extend their services overnight extending into Tuesday morning where the many dead bodies were revealed in the streets covered under sheets.

Many of the dead persons were then buried in the holy city of Najaf, however, the families of the deceased were not happy with the incident and so there was a lot of anger reportedly being expressed by them.

About the fire, several persons including the hospital director, the health director of Dhi Qar province, and the city’s defence chief were all arrested in connection with the fire. Due to the severity of the situation, the Health Minister also handed in his resignation.
