Entertainers Hits Out Against National Identification and Registration Bill
The legislation is being labelled as “intrusive” and “poorly thought out”.
The NIDS is a registration system which stipulates that every citizen will give over their biometric data.
Biometric information includes photograph, signature, fingerprint, toe-print, palm print, iris scan, retina scan, blood type, and eye colour.
The legislation makes it mandatory for citizens to register and there will be a massive fine, of up to $100,000, for citizens who fail to register. Even children will have to possess one of these IDs.
According to dub poet Yasus Afrai the government needed to have had community consultations and as such, there is a genuine reason to question their motive.
King of dancehall Beenie Man says “thats like going back to slavery days when you becomes a number nobody nuh memba yo name you are like 523 or you are 627, it no mek no sense we a watch too much movie the man dem a get to scifi.” he laughs
Beenie man went on to say he is totally against it as the [Government] is taking away peoples freedom without it been given to them.
