Recent Dump Fires Cost Jamaica $110 Million

The National Solid Waste Management Authority’s board issued a statement recently about the cost of the 11 fires that were burning at the disposal sites across the country over the past 2 months.

The fire at the Retirement dump in St James cost the country $64 million and that was the most costly fire when it was compared to the rest of them.

Mr. Dennis Chung who is the Chairman of the NSWMA has said a number of measures will be implemented to reduce the length of time it takes to put out the fires and to prevent persons from lighting the fires.

Cover material will be kept at the disposal sites, drones and other security measures will also be used to monitor the dumps.

It is believed that most of the fires have been started by arsonists.

The board will also be seeking to get a timeline for the privatization of the dumps and garbage collection.
