Jamaican Man Found with Cocaine in New Jersey, USA

A Jamaican man is facing the possibility of spending up to 40 years in prison in New Jersey, USA and he might need to pay a massive fine after being charged with smuggling a kilogram of cocaine in photo frames and coffee bags.

37-year-old, Perez Omar Gibbs, faced US Magistrate Judge Cathy Waldor via video conference this week on a count of importation of a controlled substance and was remanded in custody.

According to statements made and documents filed in the case, on January 9 Gibbs arrived at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey on a flight from Montego Bay, Jamaica.

Law enforcement officers found out that Gibbs had about one kilogramme of cocaine with him. It was hidden inside the photo frames and bags of coffee, the US Attorney’s Office of the District of New Jersey revealed.

Added to the possibility of spending the mandatory minimum 5 years in prison or the maximum of 40 years. the fine that he could be told to pay might be US$5 million.
