After the statements, Judge Peter Cahill sentenced Chauvin to 270 months in prison which amounts to a 22-and-a-half year sentencing.
Bridgett Floyd, the sister of George Floyd stated that, “The sentence handed down today to the Minneapolis police officer who killed my brother George Floyd shows that matters of police brutality are finally being taken seriously, however, we have a long way to go and many changes to make before Black and Brown people finally feel like they are being treated fairly and humanely by law enforcement in this country.”
Prosecutors had asked for a 30-year sentence while Derek’s lawyers asked for release on time spent and probation.
Currently, Derek is expected to exit prison at age 77, however, Chauvin is expected to appeal the sentencing handed down to him. Watch as the judge handed down the sentence below.
